Spirit of Aloha or Hoop De Doo?

I'm trying to think of something fun to do for my birthday dinner. I've been to Hoop De Doo and was planning on doing that for my birthday because I know I love the show and sangria. But I've never done the Spirit of Aloha show and the menu looks yummy. Is it worth trying out or should I stick to Hoop De Doo? I'm also open to other fun ideas for dinner on property. I'm a CM as are most of my friends so park entry isn't a problem but it also means that we've done most things at Disney.

They are both fun. However, the Hoop Dee Doo is WAY better. More engaging, better food, better seating. The Luau is fun and they have an awesome rum drink that comes in a carved out coconut that looks like a monkey. But, the food isn't as good, not to say its bad. The other drawback is that the seating at the Luau is only good up front. The seating extends far back from the stage, whereas at the Hoop Dee Doo there aren't any seats that are far from the action. My suggestion is stick with the Hoop Dee Doo for your birthday and then go for the Luau when you haven't got anyhting else going on.

I've done both and I would vote for Hoop Dee Doo by far.. the food is better, show is more fun, better seating... we will do it again but not the Spirit of Aloha..

We've done both as well, and enjoyed the shows at both too (although perhaps the HDDR one a little more). But no one in our family really enjoyed the food. Something else to remember is that the Aloha show is open-air (under cover of course), while Hoop is inside. So depending on when you plan to visit that may impact your decision.

Hoop Dee Doo!!

Spirit of Aloha isn't all that impressive, and the food is awful. Hoop Dee Doo is infinitely more entertaining, and the food is leagues better.

As much fun as it is to drink out of a monkey head, the beverage unfortunately had an overly-sugary taste reminiscent of Kool-Aid and didn't seem to have much alcohol in it. Huge disappointment.

The food at Aloha is just okay. Some items are good, like the pineapple bread, but most of it is generally forgettable. I didn't really care for the main course meat items but I had already filled up on other stuff by that point. The raspberry and dark chocolate dessert pudding was a super delicious compliment to my after-dinner coffee.

Overall I think Spirit of Aloha is very disappointing compared to the (relatively) more authentic beach luau that it replaced. Now that was a treat!

I agree with everyone else. We also did both shows last summer and the Spirit of Aloha was a real disappointment. We did enjoy the monkey head drinks (which are now decorating our bathroom sink). But we ended up leaving a few minutes before the end of the show so that we could get a nice seat on the beach for the fireworks at MK.

After being at both we prefer Hoop Dee Doo Review the most. If you haven't tried the Spirit of Aloha show before you might want to go to see it sometime in the future. It wasn't a horrible show, just a different type of presentation. We found the food to be what could be expected at a large gathering of people like that. Surely not to be comparable to food served in one of the restaurants. If you are looking to celebrate your Birthday with an fun time, stick with Hoop Dee Doo. HAPPY BIRTHDAY - Enjoy your day.

I will also jump on the HDDR bandwagon. I was very disappointed in Spirit of Aloha. Food and show were disappointing in my opinion. Loved the food at Hoop De Doo.

We have been to both HDD and SOA and find that we enjoy both the show and the food more at HDD. The desert though at SOA is fantastic.

I would go to Hoop Dee Doo Revue and call Disney Cake Line to have a brithday cake sent to your table. We did a baby shower at the Hoop Dee Doo Revue for my Daughter and it was a lot of fun.

Well this is good to hear, since I am going to the Hoop on Saturday. I hope the late show is as good as the early ones.

Isn't the Spirit of Aloha more expensive than Hoop de Doo? And yet it gets pretty awful reviews in comparison. I have always thought that was interesting.

Same price.

Yes, it is awful. There are parts of the 2nd half that aren't as bad, but the first half of the show is absolutely cringe-worthy.

Hoop Dee Doo hasn't changed much over the years, but it's still at least a good time.

Same price.

The Disney website is not updated then...

EDIT - Out of curiosity, I checked with reservations. Only a slight difference in price. During holiday pricing, a Category 1 seat for SOA is $71.99. Category 1 for HDD is $67.97. So essentially the same price - but sure seems like the upcharge is for the wrong show...
