The story does sound interesting. According to the article, they'd gone through 3 versions and the entire movie was retooled in 6 weeks for the 4th version. It doesn't seem particularly surprising that it would be canceled at that point.

You gotta know there are more bad ideas than good ones discarded

Tho Disney should try to take more legitimate risks on good ideas. There’s still that Guillermo Del Toro script for the Haunted Mansion laying around that they should’ve done.

I’m sure TRON 3 has a better story treatment someplace too. Can’t imagine not making more of a direct sequel to Legacy was their first pitch, I know they did rework that and then it went into development hell, so who knows.
