It's funny, I have friends that have worked the ride in recent years that insist the steering wheel used to turn- not that CM's are any kind of authority. And I know some people who insist they used to steer... but then there's also people who insist the wheel never moved. I didn't ride it until 2006 or so, and remember being disappointed it didn't turn.

What do you see in the pre-show video I posted above? I see it stationary, my brother sees it turning!

Looks stationary to me.
I'd bet it's been stationary since open, since having hand holds move seems like a mild safety concern.

I've prided myself in being the "driver" many times over the years (I like to pretend I'm actually the driver with fake hand movements and silly commentary), but I don't ever remember the steering wheel actually moving.
Pretty much this. When you have the driver's position you have the steering wheel to hold on to instead of the hand rails everyone else has. Imagine holding onto a moving wheel and it gives on a sharp turn causing you to bash your teeth into it. Disney thought about those things in the design.

It was. Crumbling parts of the ceiling falling down in volcanic splendor.

Yeah, the lazer beam that shot out from the 'eye' of the stone 'Mara' in the main Show room would seem to hit the ceiling area just as your Transport vehicle was about to enter.
When it did, right on que the falling ice made it appear as if peices of the interior stonework were falling in front of you giving the illusion of the laser beam blasting away a section of the temple.
It was a great , real effect and it happened right in front of you.
The ice was stained with tea to make it appear as if the falling fragments were actual peices of rock and not clear ice.
Staining was done to avoid the ice appearing clear which would have made it appear too visably obvious as ice with all the lighting effects in that space.
Freaking genuis idea.....too bad the machine rusted !
Would be nice to see that reworked and re-instated via a more reliable system ( and no, I don't mean projections! )

You'd be surprised, I've seen it happen in restaurants and bars a lot with their ice machines.

It was a custom made ice maker. Cost cutting forced them to use standard steel rather than stainless steel. That's why it rusted. Ice makers in hotels don't rust because they are made with stainless steel. It's been said that Tony has mentioned that the ice didn't melt fast enough after it fell to the ground.
I just re-listened to the IJA portion of the Season Pass Podcast (#3) and he mentioned the diamonds on the floor moving the ceiling effect and said that it was one of the last effects that were cut from the project (he didn't say why or that it was connected to being a safety issue), but there were other effects in the queue that were cut that he didn't talk about.
Regarding the ice effect he must have talked about that as a side-thought in another podcast. I think they did like 9 in total. I don't feel like listening to them all again at the moment.

How hard could it have been to put heating elements in the floor were the ice lands? By the size of the budget, that would have been like pennies. Houses have heated floors. How much could it have cost to cover four feet?
