Disney's Streaming Services: Disney+ (and Hulu, ESPN+, Star, & hotstar)

I haven't read the article yet, but I wondered if Disney should've kept the two platforms separate and cross-pollinated specific content. But then there's the ESPN factor.

As someone who’s had the integrated package (D+, Hulu, ESPN+) for about a year now there’s definitely pros and cons to having it all in one app.

Biggest pros being it’s convenient, the bundle makes it a lot cheaper, and the 3 channels combined give it enough content to justify the price. Even as a huge Disney fan I couldn’t justify the current price of D+ alone, the same is true of Hulu, there’s a handful of shows I really enjoy on Hulu but I could never justify paying $15 for them, the same is also true of ESPN+, I only have it for hockey, if I had to pay full price for it alone I’d just buy the Knights package and wouldn’t even bother with ESPN. As single streamers I don’t think any are worth the price, as 1 site for a reduced price it’s far easier to justify that price.

The biggest con for me is I hate seeing stuff like the Kardashians, Dancing with the Stars, etc on my homepage, considering how good direct marketing has become it’s amazing Disney can’t figure out how to customize the homepage to not show stuff people clearly have no interest in. I hate having to wade through piles of crap (in my opinion) just to find something decent to watch.

I haven’t watched the rookie but both Will Trent and High Potential are on my short list of shows that keep me subscribed to D+.

A new UI should be released sometime this year once the combined app comes. That may give you the customized homepage options you're looking for.

Besides that its easy to ignore the shows you don't want from the "Recommended" section and just go directly to the categories you do want.

Rookie is a good show, I'd recommend it. I stopped watching Will Trent after the first season just hadn't gotten back into it yet. High Potential has been a good show so far.

More profit? Sure. Facts are facts.

I mean, sure, if it were factual? 🤷‍♂️

Operating income with Disney was 17.6B for the fiscal year, Netflix 13.3. Income before taxes was 12B at Disney, 10.6B at Netflix. Netflix has even an edge with including the most recent quarter; one that I’m not quite expecting Disney to be flat in given their movie over-performance.

I’m not sure what they are pulling numbers from, I think Netflix most recent quarter to a different quarter from Disney?

I know these points are always meant to paint Disney in a bad light, but all I personally see is upside. Essentially none of its valuation is being derived from streaming, all of Netflix’s valuation is derived from streaming (and currently it’s worth twice as much). Disney has a ton of upside on the streaming ramp as it follows Netflix path with an 5-7 year delay and Netflix continues to look for the ceiling.

So either Disney is massively undervalued and Netflix valuation is fair, or Disney is valued correctly and Netflix massively over valued.

The truth is likely somewhere in between.
