Beginning next year, DVC members can register for a new, complimentary level of D23 membership that appears to be similar to the current Silver level. They will be able to upgrade to the Gold level at a discounted price. Additional details will appear in the next issue of Disney Files Magazine, which will be mailed out this Thanksgiving, and on DVCMember.com in January.

Wow!! This is awesome. Thanks DVC!! Do you know if it is per household or person? Either way it is cool. PAP discount, 10% off merchandise and now this!! It's Christmas!! ;)

Or perhaps D23 is performing so poorly they are giving it away to DVC members in the hopes of keeping it alive.

I was a founding D23 member (or whatever they called it) and let it expire because I did not feel any of the benefits applied to me. This may very well be the reasoning.

I don't want to look like totaly loser but can someone give me a proper description of what D23 is and what you get for it...I am a DVC memeber and read it in Disney Files but I am still a little confused. :)

I ran into the same issue. The magazine was nice but not really worth the cost on its own. Couple that with most of the events being on the west coast, priced to the moon and very hard to get into to boot, and the value of membership dropped to zero for me.

I will flick my bic in honor of my departed fellow charter members Dave and Richard from the luxury of the Charter Members Lounge at the next D23 Expo. At least all that nuveau-riche DVC crowd won't be Charter Members horning in on the free soda and cookies.

It is the "official" Disney fan club. The "big" thing you get is a subscription to their quarterly magazine. Like Richards said, it is a nice magazine, but it really was not thrilling me. You can also buy it at B&N (or at least you used to be able to). there were also other "perks" -special events, meet & greets, seminars, and special purchases (collectors items, pins, etc). However, most of the events were on the West coast, making them pretty much useless for me (NJ) and I guess Richard (FL) and pretty much anyone else east of the Mississippi. Not to mention the events were quite pricey. As for the merchandise, as with most things Disney, 15 minutes after the "exclusive" stuff was released to the D23 members it was up on eBay. Membership was also not cheap (I want to say $60).

My card still says charter member, maybe I can get in :p

The way I see it, with the $180 I have saved over the last 3 years, I can buy myself a lot of soda and cookies.

I don't want to get into another "Is D23 worth it?" discussion as there have been plenty of those with people clearly on each side of the fence and not having their minds changed by anything said by the other side.

Given the scope of the survey sent to members earlier this year, I doubt this is the last change we see coming from D23. Maybe it will become a better value to a wider scope of Disney fans someday. I hope so.

I let my subscription expire at the end of the first year as well, but will probably take advantage of the complimentary renewal (and perhaps the upgrade, should the price be right)....

Based on what I've read? If it's given to DVC Members for free, it's absolutely worth every penny :). Dave summed it up nicely - magazine, unless you are on the West Coast :).

When D23 first started there was a whole "is it worth it" discussion. The major point of contention was that the membersip dues were just about the same ( a buck or two more if I recall) as buyng the magazine at cover price. There was a big discussion about were the added perks worth it, was "exclusive" merch that you could get on eBay worth it, was admittiance to the events worth it, etc. People who were joining D23 were told they were "drinking the Disney Kool-Aid" and that we were behaving as sheep, buying whatever Disney puts out, and so on. I went into D23 with open eyes. I figured it could become something very good, and if it evolved into someething that I really enjoyed, then being a charter member was worth it to me. Over the course of the first year, I evaluated what they were doing, and what was made available and when the time to renew came, I decided the membership was not worth it - to ME. I think many people who were charter members still have an aversion to discussing if it is worth it. Even though they decided it was worth it to THEM, they were told by many on these boards that they were being stupid, they were part of what was becomming the commercialization of Disney, and were pretty much openly mocked. A number of people went so far as to form "anti D23" groups. I myself thought that was quite derisive and was causing some tension on the board, but I never need anyone to validate my decisions so I just watched the fighting slowly end. I didn't mean to dredge up those memories or feelings with my remarks about the cookies and soda (those were remarks that were typical during the D23 roll out)
