I told you in the last one I had to start packing… No time for a pre-TR. We’re leaving for the hotel at the airport today.

Sunday January 18th- Day 0 Continued
Lil BES considers the restaurant at IKEA to be her one of her all-time favorites. I mean they do have what every kid craves-a plate of smoked salmon and a side of peas.
Oh not every kid? Just my kid?
Sadly for lil BES we don’t leave near an IKEA but it is along our route to DTW. We stopped for dinner on our way to the airport hotel.
We got to the restaurant only to discover there were no plates of salmon.
I mean it was end of the day on a Sunday so I get it. But would lil BES?
Luckily she pivoted to the first of approximately 82637292 Mac and cheeses she ate on this trip. Plus peas.
DH got falafel meatballs and I got the vegetarian meatballs. Just calling them balls seems more correct but simultaneously more wrong.
No shade to Disney but one of the cheapest and most delicious meals of the trip. #lignonberrysauce
After dinner we did a bit of browsing. Lil BES is obsessed with looking at the fake food in the model fridges.
On our way out lil BES declared her tummy didn’t feel good.
We made a pitstop at Target for kid’s medicines for all possible tummy scenarios. Also for post-its and a few things DH decided he needed. (Mostly snacks).
Eventually we made it to the hotel at DTW. It always cracks me up to valet my regular car there amongst all of the fancy ones.
After a very slow check in process we were up in our “upgraded” room. We got a runaway view room which is cool but louder.
Also it was supposed to be a king bed but it definitely felt smaller.
Lil BES was feeling a bit better tummy-wise and I was hoping a good night’s sleep (next to a jet) would help.
Everyone was in bed at a decent time. I triple checked my alarm for the morning and peeked at the weather.
I was grateful to not have to wake up even earlier to drive. This time past BES did current time BES a solid in booking the airport hotel.
Don’t worry! Not foreshadowing about our hotel stay. One of lil BES’s hot jams due to Lilo and Stitch

I think our kids would be friends. DD4 would gladly join lil BES for a plate of lox, though she’d prefer mashed potatoes to peas. Gotta love ikea.
Monday January 19th Day 1
Lil BES didn’t sleep very well. Which means no one slept very well. Many demands for Kleenex, water and snuggles.
I was up at 5am. We let Lil BES sleep as long as possible. She was excited when we woke her but still not feeling 100%.
My goal was for us to leave our room at 530. Welp. That ended up being real close to 6am.
Leaving hotel, note the dress:
Luggage check-in was smooth. And per our usual experience at DTW the TSA pre check line was non-existent and the staff were a legit delight.
As our agent was screening us she looked at lil BES’s boarding pass and asked “Hey there pink dinosaur. What’s your name?”
Lil BES just scowled at her.
TSA lady: “Can I get a high five lil BES?”
Lil BES just stared. “No”
I apologized that she was still waking up.
“Oh me too girl!” the TSA lady chuckled and sent us on our way.
Next order of business was one lil BES wouldn’t forget no matter how tired she was. Her obligatory airport morning cake pop.
I mobile ordered the cake pop and box of horizon milk for lil BES and coffees for the adults.
They must have been out of the milk boxes…
Lil BES thought it was hilarious.
Lil BES is a pro on escalators now so we went up to the DTW internal tram and made it to the gate with plenty of time to spare.
We ate the power muffins lil BES insisted we made that weekend for this very occasion. Solid call lil BES.
Soon it was time to board.

I'll be flying out of DTW in two days, unfortunately, it won't be to Disney. DTW is our go to airport, much better than others that are closer to us.
Hope your flight went well. The more other airports I’ve been to, the more I appreciate DTW.

We returned last night. We flew to San Antonio. Another airport that makes me appreciate DTW, it's just so much cleaner, easier, and has more options than other airports. And the new bathrooms in McNamara Terminal are amazing! It's like the parking garage at Disney Springs, with the lights above the stalls to let you know if the toilet is occupied!
Monday January 19th Day 1 Continued:
Things of note from the plane ride:
More importantly DH and I had shared the burden of constantly replugging in lil BES’s headphones.
Lil BES every 5 minutes:
No shade to The Preacher’s Wife but I can’t imagine in 2026 tons of kids are picking it for their inflight entertainment.
At MCO lil BES and I got the stroller while DH got the luggage. Then we headed over to Mears. As DH was trying to figure out how to wrangle the bags, I couldn’t help but point out I did it the year prior alone and with one still janky wrist.
DH:
In WDW at 11:50:
I can’t remember the bus drop route but I feel like we were last. Soon enough we were at Riverside.
After brief visit with the front desk, the gift card from DH’s refunded last year ticket was applied to our room. The CM noted our room was now ready. Oak Manor, 3rd floor.
And it turned out to be a river view too. We really liked this location.
Lil BES really liked the PatF theming. And she also really liked these curtains

I really liked the step stool in the bathroom.
We dropped off our luggage and then went back to the main building for lunch in the Food Court.
At lunch Lil BES reminded us that we were on vacation now and we told her on vacation we would go swimming.
I have been deemed “the swimming parent” by both DH and lil BES. Learn from my mistakes dear readers. Do not let there be just one swimming parent. Or if you do, make sure that parent isn’t you.
Two of us changed and walked to the main pool. As a Michigander, the water temperature was acceptable. Lil BES had a blast.
The walk back to the room was chilly. Lil BES and I showered and we watched TV for a while.
When lil BES declared she was hungry we decided to walk over to Port Orleans. Lil BES fell asleep long before we reached our destination. We strolled her inside, ordered food (for all of us) and sat inside.
Despite the all of the food court noise, lil BES remained asleep until DH and I were almost done eating. At first lil BES was upset that she thought she missed dinner. Then we whipped out her chicken tendies and all was right with the world.
After dinner we returned to our room had an early night. Everyone, especially lil BES, needed more sleep.
Things of note from the plane ride:
- Definitely a day when de-icing the wings was time well spent:
- Lil BES sat in the middle seat! This meant I got to look out the window.

We got the food court at good time. Waffles kids meals for girls. Oatmeal for DH.
In line for the bus DH noted it was -8*F at home.
Today’s park was selected by lil BES. Epcot
Or as she calls it: Ep-A-cot. I’ll never correct her. It’s adorable.
There was something at Ep-A-cot that she wanted to do on day one- Akershus. In retrospect, I should have kept the original plan of it being later in the trip.
Once at Epcot, Lil BES and I had to make a pit stop to activate our annual passes.*
DH:
The CM asked DH if he wanted to upgrade. He didn’t say yes but he also didn’t say no.
We entered Epcot right at park opening. A Disney first it feels for lil BES and her…. relaxed timeline.
The wait for Test Track was 15 minutes. Lil BES was all in. Before the trip we had looked at rides she was newly tall enough for and this was the one she was the most excited about.
As we nearest the entrance to the line I guided her to the height check. As lil BES tried to align herself to the stick the CM said “Oh you’re good! You’re definitely tall enough!”
Lil BES beamed.
She loved the ride. Especially when she got to go fast.
As we exited the ride and walked through the car showroom DH remarks that this has to be the most expensive post ride gift shop.
I wonder how many cars have actually been purchased from there…

My mom had told lil BES about the transition from Halloween to Christmas at WDW and how you could see both holidays on one trip. Lil BES 99%** on board with this.
I did the math (maths for you UK folks) and the APs made sense for us. Especially if I sneak our next January trip in before they expire. I did tell DH about this when I bought them but he forgot.
** More on this 1% later.

One of my girls, who Lil BES reminds me of with her red hair, always called it Ep-A-cot when she was little. She’s 19 now and we still say it

My sisters and I, in kid logic, assumed it must be Apricot center, because who ever heard of an Epcot…? So we do still call it apricot center. Kids are so delightfully weird.

I was easily able to change our reservation for Akershus to 12:35pm.
Lil BES noticed the outside of Mission Space and wanted to know if she was tall enough. Yep. Off to a walk on Green Mission.
Lil BES loves space. She took this ride super serious. She carefully watched each pre-show video with clasped hands and full attention.
We made sure lil BES was the pilot. The ride was a big hit. And that was *before* she discovered the post ride playground and computer games.
After a while of playing we set off to walk around World Showcase as we awaited our lunch reservation.
Lil BES decided we needed pre-lunch popcorn. Serendipitously, the first popcorn cart we came to was in Canada.
We got maple popcorn and a new popcorn bucket. Identical to the one we got last trip, DH didn’t want me to bring the old one along…
That maple popcorn was a Disney first for us. So good. We had to keep sneaking it from lil BES as she didn’t want to share.
Lil BES soon fell asleep as we strolled. She still wasn’t feeling 100%.
At one of the food booths DH got a chorizo potato empanada.
DH: “Put it in your trip report. Tell them it’s a thumbs up.”
Me: “You should have let me take a pic…”
DH: “Show them this”:
We still had more time to kill before lunch a a sleeping lil BES. As we passed China described the Tipsy Ducks in Love drink to DH. Bourbon coffee chocolate dairy.
DH: “That’s like all of your favorite things. Get it.”
I hemmed and hawed but I did. With boba and egg rolls.
Spotted a Disney shirt for DH: My wife wanted to go to Disney and I didn’t so we compromised and went to Disney.
We both got a kick out of that one.
DH and Lil BES love them some Bowie. Recently we were at a restaurant with a huge portrait of Bowie by our table. DH asked a very hangry Lil BES who it was.
She just scowled and said she didn’t want to talk about it.

We continued to walk until about 10 minutes before our Akershus reservation. And then it was time to awake lil BES.
Post-nap lil BES is always a surprise.
She stated during and after the meal that she loved it. But did not express this to any princess in any way.
The princesses were fantastic but Lil BES looks annoyed in every pic.
My favorite pic of the bunch was this:
Lil BES’s true expression reads “Oh great. There’s another princess right behind me, isn’t there?”
DH saw the bill and said he didn’t feel so bad about all of his music buying.
The desserts that lil BES had thought about for the previous year:
The Norwegian strawberry one was the winner.
After lunch lil BES was ready to go back to the room. She said she was getting sweaty and swimming would help her cool off. DH convinced her the best way for us to go was to walk to HS and get a bus there.
DH and I chatted as we strolled.
DH: “So we’ve got one more night at the first hotel?….”
Me: “No. Three.”
DH: “Oh. So then one night at the next hotel?”
Me: “No. Four.”
DH: “Ooooh. That’s a lot of days.”
When we finally got back to the room, lil BES and I suited up to swim and we all walked over to POFQ.
There were no other kids in splash pad which wasn’t very fun for lil BES. She then wanted me to swim with her in big pool. It was much colder than the previous day. Too cold. Even for lil BES.
Soon we were off to the hot tub. Then the big pool again. And then quickly back to the hot tub a final time.
After a soggy walk back to room we showered and then headed off to the food court for dinner.
Along the way, we saw horse poop in the path. Lil BES thought it was hilarious.
After dinner it was back to the room to relax and get Lil BES some rest. Lil BES had other ideas. She jumped between the two beds for a while. She was out by 815pm and we weren’t too far behind her.
We continued to walk until about 10 minutes before our Akershus reservation. And then it was time to awake lil BES.
Post-nap lil BES is always a surprise.
She stated during and after the meal that she loved it. But did not express this to any princess in any way.
The princesses were fantastic but Lil BES looks annoyed in every pic.

Lil BES’s true expression reads “Oh great. There’s another princess right behind me, isn’t there?”
DH saw the bill and said he didn’t feel so bad about all of his music buying.

Wednesday January 21st, Day 3:
I was awake at 530. It was the first night in I wasn’t woken up by lil BES’s demands for tissue or water. I was hopeful that meant lil BES was finally feeling better.
We got ready and got on bus to MK. Along the way DH devised a game to play that day. If someone (lil BES) in the family could spot 10 iterations of a character he would buy them ice cream. Lil BES chose Stitch. As she says: “That guy is everywhere.”
Our plan was breakfast in the park. The Starbucks line was as expected but we were headed to the Tomorrowland Joffreys.
Lil BES got her obligatory head-sized pink donut. We got pastries and coffee.
Much like post-nap lil BES, morning lil BES is a wildcard. Sometimes sour. Sometimes sweet. A Sour-patch Kid.
Space Chip and Dale were wandering Tomorrowland. We watched from a bench as we ate our breakfast. Chip came over to peek in our stroller. Lil BES just glared at him and pulled down her stroller canopy.

Lil BES’s first ride request was the Speedway. Only a 10 min wait. Lil BES declared she wanted to ride with me. DH wondered out loud if he should just get out of line and go drink his coffee while we rode. I glared at him.
He stayed in line.
Next up was lil BES’s first rollercoaster ever- The Barnstormer. She rode with DH and loved it.
Despite lil BES’s still vivid memory of scrapping her knee here last year, she wanted to do the Teacups next.
The carousel was up next. DH did sit this one out. The teacups is a stretch for him motion sickness-wise so following it up with more spinning is a no go.
The Stepsisters were yuking it up while we waited.
I think I ended up standing by lil BES’s because we couldn’t get two horses next to each other. All the better for taking pictures.

Lil BES was eagerly awaiting her chance to ride Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Tiana remains firmly in lil BES’s top tier of princesses.
She was staying at the “Tiana hotel”. She met her at lunch yesterday and the ride would complete the Tiana trifecta.
It lived up to a 4yo’s expectations and ours too. Neither DH and I were huge Splash fans so to us the ride was ok before and remains ok now.
Thought the TBA queue was cute. Only took one poor pic of it:

Our MK lunch was our standard CHH on the account of the kid’s salmon meal.
After lunch we climbed the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse.
DH and lil BES had recently finished the book.
Much like the book, the walk-thru fails to give the mom a name other than “my good wife”
We did a spin on the people mover.
After lil BES decided she wanted to cash in her ice cream reward as she was well over 10 stitch sightings.
Strawberry for lil BES. All American Sundae for me. For DH- Raspberry sorbet (the kind you find at a second hand store…)
Off to IASW next. Lil BES dozed off mid-ride which was adorable.
We popped lil BES in the stroller and started our vacation tradition of strolling her to GF while she slept.
We grabbed some coffee and walked on to Poly.
Now that lil BES asks questions about lyrics there is far less Prince music that DH plays on speakers in the house.

We've called my youngest niece "the sour patch kid" since she was an infant! One minute, she's all smiles and cuddles, and the next she looks like she's intricately plotting your downfall
. I can't wait to tell my sister that someone else uses this analogy.
