    Live-Action reimagining of Moana

Right... I'd forgotten about that stuff, and even then I tend to think of the wide-reaching arcade/video game references in that one as opposed to the Disney-specific bits.

    Live-Action reimagining of Moana

100%. That movie was a fun reference/Easter egg hunt for people who know Nintendo franchises (not even just Mario) very deeply. I do as well, so it was fun for that, but not a good story/movie really by any stretch of the imagination. The Disney equivalent to this sort of thing doesn't really...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I mean, it also helps that it is an extremely popular book as far as books go, so it has name recognition going for it. And the marketing has also leaned heavily into "from the writer of The Martian," etc. So to say it's this genuinely original movie that's doing gangbusters at the box office is...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

This Collider piece says $14m. Not sure where they've pulled that figure from, as I don't think I've seen anything more specific than "less than $20m" anywhere else. https://collider.com/ready-or-not-2-box-office-10-million-samara-weaving-horror-sequel/

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Speaking of trailers, what feels like a really early one for one of Disney's awards plays for next year dropped today. It's racked up... um... 1.8 million views in 12 hours. Be forewarned, the trailer contains vulgar language, if that bothers anyone out there.

It definitely wasn't my favorite PTA flick either, but it was definitely in the group of 2025 films I would have been satisfied with winning.

A... war movie? We're talking about Snow White here, or am I just really confused as to what you're talking about?

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I believe that Snow White's score was significantly lower upon release and has slowly (and rightfully) been rising since then. It's a solid 6 or 7 for me in that I would recommend it to fans of certain other things. I don't recall Captain Marvel being review bombed, unless that happened well...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Agreed that score is insane (much like the Snow White one you cited upthread), but it's got a 5 MetaScore and is 11% fresh, so it's possible that brand of propaganda doesn't make for a formally good film. Curiously, the popcorn meter is 98%. Do we have a term for reverse review bombing?

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I did and enjoyed it quite a bit, but then again I'm onboard with pretty much all of PTA's efforts (There Will Be Blood, Magnolia, The Master, etc.) to date. It's pretty crowd-pleasing compared to most of his stuff, which is how it ended up being the #1 scripted movie two weeks in a row. [Note...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I'm trying to remember what movie ads I saw last night. I didn't tune into the pregame, so missed the Hoppers one. I think during the game there was: Minions The Mandalorian and Grogu Project Hail Mary The Adventures of Cliff Booth (which I don't think actually named the movie in the ad) Super...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

This probably comes down to the kind of distributor/theater deals that the Ankler pieces I linked were talking about. Universal makes them take 17-day movie A as a requirement to being allowed to also screen movies B, C, & D. Netflix's movies are all the same short window (if they're even put...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Theaters do currently turn down Netflix's 17-day movies. That's why they don't play at most of the large chains. You are right in that it would be a whole different proposition if the entire WB slate also became 17-day movies overnight. Studios have theaters over a barrel in a lot of different...

    Live-Action reimagining of Moana

Hasn't Miranda been working on new songs/music for this? (It's part of why he didn't do the songs for Moana 2.) That would imply that there will be additional sequences added, if nothing else.

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Sometimes, heartbreak feels good in a place like this. My spouse and I both love it as well. Our local single-screen variety theater just showed Return to Oz a couple of weeks ago. The marquee said something like "Just a normal kids movie" above the title -- had us both laughing. Alas, we...
